We are now 16 volumes into the Thor masterworks line. This one covers the entirety of the year 1977, 12 regular monthly issues and the the annual. While no new ground is broken in this volume, it's still a very enjoyable read. The plots, while very familiar by now, are executed skillfully enough not to bore the long time Thor reader and will no doubt delight someone whose introduction to Thor are the stories in this volume. This collection is a "cosmic" sort of book. All the action takes place in Asgard or elsewhere in the universe; we do not ever get a glimpse of Earth and you would never know Thor had a human alter ego going strictly by this volume except that the boilerplate splash page blurb reminds the reader every issue. If you prefer "terrestrial" Thor stories, well, this collection is not for you.
The monthly books have two story arcs. The first is the very familiar quest story where Thor, Sif, and the Warriors three go searching for the lost Odin. Along the way they have a few memorable encounters before finally reaching their objective. Needless to say, they finally prevail. Meanwhile, Balder is holding down the fort in Asgard, aided by the devious, but devoted to Balder, Karnilla. Despite their efforts, the villainous Loki usurps the throne of Asgard yet again before being finally thwarted by our returning heroes.
Len Wein does a fine job of keeping the Thor pot boiling with his plots and dialogue but as noted above we've seen these plots many times before. John Buscema does his last work on the title before turning over the artistic chores to Walter Simonson, who, a few years, later would bring the title to new heights.
The annual is a team up of Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxy against the villain Korvac. Good, not great, stuff but it does set up the well regarded "Korvac saga" that would play out in the Avengers title (and which has already been masterworked).
Extras are limited to a generous 21 pages of original art and layouts. Simonson contributes a four page introduction that includes some Thor artwork he did while in college.
Recommended, but like I said, not a model of innovative storytelling.
